Hozelock Auto Reel 30m Review: Tidy, but Will the Spring Last?
A wall box that winds 30 metres of hose back in by itself is a genuinely nicer way to garden — when it works. A hands-on tester and nearly a thousand Screwfix buyers say it does. An owner-review site with a much smaller sample says the rewind is exactly where these reels fail. Both can be true, and the guarantee is what decides which one you end up living with.
Where the reviews line up
No national consumer title has published a test of the 30 m model, so the evidence comes from three places: a hands-on install and test at DIY Garden (on the 40 m sibling), 958 buyer ratings at Screwfix, and the owner reviews on Australia's ProductReview.com.au. They agree on more than the headline scores suggest.
Everyone agrees on the good part. The auto-rewind with a brake is the whole point: you pull out as much hose as you need, it catches and holds at that length, and a tug lets it wind back in under control, laying itself neatly on the drum. The 180° pivot on the wall bracket stops the hose dragging round corners, and the case keeps 30 m of hose out of sight and out of the sun.
The sources split on how long it lasts. Screwfix buyers rate it 4.5/5; the smaller owner sample on ProductReview.com.au rates the Auto Reel family 2.4/5, and the complaints there cluster on rewind failure, leaks from the centre spindle and hoses splitting after one to three years. Hozelock does not repair Auto Reels, but it does sell a £23 service kit for the inlet and ball stop.
So the buying decision is about the guarantee and the winter. Register it online within 30 days to get Hozelock's five years, keep the receipt, and do not leave it to freeze — Hozelock says frost damage voids the guarantee. Do that and the failure reports become a warranty claim rather than a £125 loss.
The three reviews this summary is built from
- DIY GardenHands-on install and test of the 40 m 2595 sibling, 4.3/5. The only source that drilled the wall.
- Screwfix4.5/5 from 958 buyer reviews on the 30 m listing, checked 6 Oct 2026. A retailer page that sells it.
- ProductReview.com.au2.4/5 from 34 owner reviews across Auto Reel sizes, 71% negative. Australian owners, small sample.
Before the review: which Auto Reel this is
This page covers the current wall-mounted Auto Reel with 30 m hose, code 2403. Hozelock's own product page lists it alongside the 20 m version (2401) and it is in stock at Screwfix and Garden4less as of 6 October 2026. Older listings and videos show the previous 2490 (20 m), 2590 (30 m) and 2595 (40 m) generation. They look similar and share a service kit, but they are not the same box — check the code on the listing.

DIY Garden
A specialist gardening site rather than a national title, but it is the only source we found that actually fixed one of these to a wall and used it. The reel tested is the 40 m 2595, so treat the findings as evidence about the mechanism, not about the 2403's box. The same site also ranks the Auto Reel first in its best-hose-reel round-up (updated 24 June 2026), where it scores 4.6/5 — although that round-up mixes 20 m and 40 m figures in the same entry, so we lean on the dedicated review.
The mechanism is the reason to buy. The tester describes the brake engaging when you pull the hose out and let go, and a smooth, controlled return without having to feed it by hand. The round-up's line is the one that matters: it locks automatically as you pull the hose out and can be used at any length. The 180° swing on the bracket stopped the hose kinking at the corner of the house, and the three-layer hose was tough and not easy to kink.
The fitting is where it bites. The job needed a hammer drill, a spirit level and a 7 mm masonry bit the tester struggled to find; the supplied screws were so soft he nearly stripped a head; and the round-up warns it can take two people and a long screwdriver. The plastic tap connector dripped and was swapped for a brass one. Buy decent screws and a brass tap connector with it.

Watch on YouTube ↗Screwfix
Nearly a thousand ratings at 4.5 is a strong number for a product with a spring in it, and Screwfix's buyers skew towards people who fit things themselves. But these are ratings on the retailer's own listing, mostly given soon after purchase, and we could not read the individual reviews — so we can tell you the score, not what the unhappy buyers said. Cite the number, not a verdict on longevity.
Screwfix is also the most complete spec source for this exact box: 655 × 540 × 262 mm and 14 kg, which is a two-handed lift onto a bracket at chest height. It lists the full contents including wall fixings and three tap connector sizes, a 35°C maximum water temperature, and the five-year guarantee with registration required. At £124.99 it was also the cheapest of the four prices we checked.

Watch on YouTube ↗ProductReview.com.au
This is the counterweight, and it needs handling carefully. It is an Australian owner-review site, the listing lumps together 20, 25, 30 and 40 m reels of different ages, and 34 reviews is small beside Screwfix's 958. Review sites like this also attract people with a complaint. But it is the only place we found where owners describe what happens after year one, and it agrees with the obvious weak point of any spring-driven reel.
By our count of the page, around fifteen reviews describe the rewind failing or retracting poorly, around eight describe leaks from the centre spindle with worn O-rings or a snapped spring, around six describe the hose splitting at fittings within one to three years, and around four say the lock stopped catching. Several warranty complaints are specific to Australia — Hozelock refusing claims outside the UK — or to registration emails that never arrived. The handful of happy owners are mostly long-term users who say it has lasted.
What it adds for a UK buyer: register the guarantee and keep the confirmation email; and know that Hozelock does not repair these. The Z-71022 service kit (inlet assembly and ball stop, £22.95 at Tooled-Up) covers the leak-at-the-spindle failure. We found no spring or replacement-hose part listed for the 2403.

Watch on YouTube ↗Using it with the Kärcher K4
If you are buying this to feed a pressure washer, the two fit together simply: the Kärcher K4 Power Control comes with a garden-hose adapter, and the Auto Reel's hose-end connector clicks onto it. Pull out only as much hose as reaches the drive, let it lock, and the reel takes the slack back when you finish rather than leaving 30 m on the lawn. The K4 draws up to 420 litres an hour (Kärcher's figure), and the reel hose has to deliver that without kinking; the braided anti-kink hose is the right kind for that. We could not find Kärcher's minimum supply-hose bore and length, so check the K4 manual before you rely on the full 30 m run.
Strengths and weak points
What holds up
- Auto-rewind with a brake: the hose winds back under control and lays itself on the drum.
- Locks at whatever length you pull out — no hose left under tension on the path.
- 180° pivot on the bracket stops the hose dragging and kinking at the corner.
- 30 m of three-layer anti-kink hose plus a 2 m feeder, all fittings and three tap sizes in the box.
- Child lock and a padlock point, which matters on a front wall.
- 4.5/5 from 958 Screwfix buyers, and five years' guarantee if you register.
What people complain about
- Rewind failure, spindle leaks and split hoses are the recurring owner complaints after a year or more.
- Hozelock does not repair Auto Reels; the only spares kit we found covers the inlet and ball stop.
- 14 kg on a bracket — the tester found the supplied screws soft and needed a 7 mm bit.
- The plastic tap connector dripped in testing.
- Frost damage voids the guarantee, and Hozelock advises storing the hose or reel indoors.
- Guarantee is only five years with online registration; one retailer quotes two years.
Who it actually suits
Buy it if you water a medium garden most days in summer, have a solid brick or block wall near the outside tap, and are happy to register the guarantee the day it arrives. The lock-at-length and auto-rewind really do make a 30 m hose something you use rather than something you untangle.
Look elsewhere if you only water occasionally, have no masonry wall to take a 14 kg bracket, or would rather have nothing spring-driven to fail. A manual wall reel or a hose cart costs less and has almost nothing to go wrong — Hozelock's own Compact Reel with 30 m of hose was listed from £32.80 on PriceSpy on 6 October 2026.
What we could not check
- The hose bore. Screwfix UK lists 12.5 mm (½″); a Screwfix Ireland listing title for the same product number says 10.5 mm; Hozelock's own page does not say. We have printed both.
- Hozelock's product page in full. The current page returned an error when fetched directly; we read it through Hozelock's own alternative link, which shows codes, the 180° pivot, the brake, the child lock and the five-year registered guarantee, but no price or bore.
- A UK RRP. Hozelock shows none. Garden4less claims an RRP of £297.99 and Easy Garden Irrigation a "was" price of £159.99; neither is a Hozelock figure.
- The guarantee conflict. Hozelock, Screwfix and Garden4less say five years with registration; Easy Garden Irrigation says two. We have gone with the maker, and flagged the other.
- Winter storage in practice. Hozelock advises taking the hose or reel indoors when not in use and says frost damage voids the guarantee. We could not confirm whether the 2403 reel lifts off its bracket without tools, or whether draining it is enough.
- Spring or hose spares. We found the Z-71022 service kit, but no spring, drum or replacement hose listed for the 2403.
- The text of Screwfix's 958 reviews — only the score and count were readable — and B&Q's rating, which did not load.
- Independent testing of the 30 m model. DIY Garden tested the 40 m 2595; we found no Which?, Gardeners' World or national-title test of the 2403.
- Wall clearances and suitability for timber, cladding or render. Only brick, stone and concrete are mentioned.
- Kärcher's minimum supply-hose requirement for the K4.
- The videos. All three were confirmed by appearing in two differently-worded search listings, not by opening them, and none of the listings named the channel.
