Kärcher K4 Power Control Review: 130 Bar, Two Boxes and a 28-Day Deadline

The K4 Power Control is the mid-range pressure washer most UK households end up with, and the evidence for it is unusually consistent: a hands-on editorial test, owners reporting years of use, and nearly five hundred Argos ratings. What the evidence does not settle is which number to believe on the box, which box to buy, and whether you will get the five-year guarantee — so we have set those out first.

Where the reviews line up

Our three sources are very different in kind: a hands-on test by Expert Reviews, which named it a Best Buy; a twenty-post owners’ thread on the MG EVs forum, where several people report three to five years of regular use; and Argos buyer ratings, 4.62 out of 5 from 475 reviews. They agree on more than they disagree.

Three things recur. It is powerful enough for the jobs people actually buy it for — Expert Reviews ran it over a tarmac drive, concrete steps and a car with snow foam, and calls it the best all-round pressure washer it has tested. The controls are the point of the model: the G 160 Q gun shows the pressure setting on an LED display, so you can drop to a gentle spray for a car or garden furniture without swapping lances. And it lasts — the forum owners are not reviewing in week one, they are reporting years of use with no problems.

The complaints are minor and consistent too. Expert Reviews found the hose stiff and awkward and the assembly instructions unclear, and judged it no big leap on the previous K4. The single serious warning comes from the forum: drain it before winter, because water left inside can freeze and crack internal plastic parts.

The buying decision is mostly paperwork. Kärcher publishes the pressure as “20 – max. 130 bar”; Argos lists 110 bar rated and 130 bar maximum. The Home kit adds a T 5 patio cleaner and a litre of stone cleaner — worth it only if you have a patio. And the five-year guarantee is only five years if you register within 28 days of purchase; otherwise it is two.

Before the review: which K4 Power Control?

Kärcher sells several machines under this name, and listings mix them up. This page is about the K 4 Power Control (Kärcher order number 1.324-032.0) and its Home kit version (1.324-034.0), which is the same machine plus a T 5 surface cleaner and 1 litre of 3-in-1 stone and façade cleaner. The K4 Power Control Flex (sold by Screwfix) is a different model with a PremiumFlex hose and a telescopic handle, and Screwfix lists it at 13.88 kg. The K4 Full Control and K4 Premium Power Control are different again. Older stock of the Power Control Home has been listed as a 120-bar machine; the current one is listed at 130. Check the order number before you pay.

Expert Reviews

Editorial test “Kärcher K4 Power Control review: The best all-round pressure washer”, Stuart Andrews, 28 November 2023, Best Buy · expertreviews.co.uk · the only hands-on test

This is the source with a method: the reviewer used the K4 on a car with snow foam, on tarmac driveways and on concrete steps, and tried the optional car brush and T 5 surface cleaner. His verdict is that it is powerful and versatile, with a fierce jet when you need it and a gentler spray for delicate surfaces, and that the controls are excellent — the LED pressure indicators on the gun and the Vario Power lance make it easy to set the force to the job. He quotes the same core figures Kärcher does: 1,800 W, 130 bar maximum, 420 l/h, an 8 m hose and 11.5 kg.

The criticisms are worth reading because they are the ones owners repeat. The high-pressure hose is inflexible and awkward, the assembly instructions could be clearer, and there is no big upgrade over the previous K4 — so if you already own an older one in working order, this is not a reason to replace it. The review is nearly three years old and quotes £199; the price has moved since. It gives no noise figure.

MG EVs forum

Community “Is the K4 pressure washer any good?”, started 20 April 2025, about 20 posts from several owners · mgevs.com · long-term owners, mostly of the Flex

A car-owners’ forum is a useful counterweight to a review written in the first weeks of use, because people answer the question that matters: is it still working? The answers are reassuring. One owner says theirs has been used two or three times a week for three years and they would buy it again; another reports about five years with no problems. One describes it as quieter than the Bosch it replaced — the only comment on noise we found in any source, and it is a comparison, not a measurement. Refurbished units from Kärcher’s outlet store also get a recommendation.

Two cautions. First, the machine most posters own is the Power Control Flex, a close sibling with the same 1.8 kW water-cooled motor but a different hose and handle, so treat this as evidence about the family rather than this exact box. Second, the most useful line in the thread is a warning: pump the water out before winter, because one poster’s relative had a unit leak after internal plastic parts froze. Another warns against using the rotating Dirt Blaster lance on car paint.

Argos

Verified buyers 4.62/5 from 475 reviews, checked 4 October 2026 · argos.co.uk · volume, on the page that sells it

Argos is the largest single block of UK ratings we found, and 475 reviews at 4.62 is a strong, broad result for a machine at this price. Read it for what it is: owners scoring a product on a retailer’s own page, mostly soon after buying, and the review text was not readable in the page content we could fetch — so we can give you the score and the sample size, but not the themes behind them.

The Argos listing is useful for something else: it is where the 110 bar figure comes from. Argos lists the K4 at 110 bar rated and 130 bar maximum; Kärcher’s own page prints only “20 – max. 130 bar”. Pressure washer makers usually quote the maximum, and the pressure you work at is lower, so Argos’s split is plausible — but it is Argos’s number, not one we could find from Kärcher. Argos also repeats the guarantee terms: two years as standard, five with registration.

Strengths and weak points

What holds up

  • Enough power for drives, patios, steps and cars — an editorial Best Buy.
  • The pressure display on the gun lets you go gentle without changing lance.
  • Owners report three to five years of regular use without problems.
  • Water-cooled 1.8 kW motor, 420 l/h, 8 m hose and 5 m cable are generous at the price.
  • 4.62/5 from 475 Argos buyers.
  • Five-year guarantee available — if you register in time.

What people complain about

  • The standard hose is stiff and awkward to handle.
  • Assembly instructions are unclear.
  • Little improvement on the previous K4.
  • Must be drained before frost, or internal parts can crack.
  • The Dirt Blaster lance is too aggressive for car paint.
  • No published noise figure, and Kärcher prints no working-pressure figure.

Who it actually suits

Buy it if you want one machine for the car, the bins, the garden furniture and an occasional go at the drive, and you value being able to turn the pressure down as much as up. Buy the Home kit only if you have a patio or a block-paved drive — the T 5 surface cleaner is the thing that makes those jobs bearable, and it is not cheap to add later. Whichever you buy, register it with Kärcher the week it arrives.

Look elsewhere if you already own a working older K4 (the editorial test found no big upgrade), if the stiff hose would annoy you (the Power Control Flex is the version with the better hose), or if you only wash a car a few times a year, in which case a smaller K2 or K3 will do the job.

What we could not check

  • The videos were confirmed by search listing, not by opening them. YouTube would not load for us, so each video’s address and title were confirmed in at least two separate search results. None of those listings named the channel.
  • Noise. We found no published dB figure from Kärcher, Argos or Expert Reviews. The only comment is one forum owner saying it is quieter than their old Bosch.
  • Working pressure. Argos lists 110 bar rated; Kärcher’s page prints only “20 – max. 130 bar”. We could not find Kärcher’s own working figure.
  • Kärcher’s own UK price (RRP). The Kärcher UK product page we read did not show a price.
  • B&Q and Screwfix prices for this exact model. B&Q’s listing we found was the K4 Full Control; Screwfix’s page for the standard Power Control returns “no longer available”, and Screwfix now sells the Flex at £199.99.
  • Whether the five-year guarantee applies to every K4 Power Control. Kärcher’s guarantee page says K 2 to K 7 machines carry “2 or 5 years depending on model”, with registration within 28 days required for five. Argos says five years applies to this one. Confirm when you register.
  • What Argos buyers actually said. We could read the score and count, not the review text.
  • No Which? test result. We did not find a public Which? score for this model.
