Kärcher SC 3 EasyFix Review: The Steam Cleaner That Is Not a Steam Mop

A cylinder steam cleaner on a hose, not a mop on a stick. It is ready in about 30 seconds, you can top it up without waiting for it to cool, and it comes with tools for grout, hobs, taps and windows as well as the floor. Testers and buyers rate it well. The real question is whether you want all that, or just a clean kitchen floor, because for floors alone a steam mop is cheaper and quicker to get out.

Where the reviews line up

The evidence comes from three places: a hands-on home test by Woman & Home (backed by earlier tests at Top Ten Reviews and Real Homes), owners talking about Kärcher cylinder cleaners and steam cleaning generally in two Mumsnet threads, and buyer ratings at Currys, Toolstation and PriceSpy. On the basics they agree.

Three things come up everywhere. It is fast: Kärcher claims 30 seconds to steam and every tester who mentions it says the same. It does detail work well: grout, taps, hobs and tight corners are where reviewers were most impressed. And it runs for as long as you like, because the 1-litre tank can be topped up while the unit is hot. Top Ten Reviews got about 23 minutes of steam from one fill.

Two honest caveats. The cable is short: 4 metres, and two of the three editorial testers complained about it. And floors are left slightly damp and need a minute to dry, or a wipe.

The buying decision is cylinder or mop. If you mainly want to steam hard floors, a stick steam mop such as the Shark Klik n’ Flip is quicker to get out and cheaper. The SC 3 is worth buying if you will also use the hand tools on the kitchen and bathroom. Whichever you choose, check your flooring maker’s care guide before you steam laminate.

The three reviews this summary is built from

Before the review: is it still on sale, and which SC 3?

Yes. On 7 October 2026 Kärcher’s UK site listed the SC 3 EasyFix, part number 1.513-652.0, as a current model. Euronics listed it at £164.99, Toolstation at £159.99, and PriceSpy tracked it at 13 shops. Three things share the name. The SC 3 EasyFix Extra is the same machine in a bundle with a window tool, a carpet glider and extra cloths. The SC 3 Upright EasyFix is a stick steam mop, not a cylinder. The older 1.513-124.0 is a continental-European code you will see on eBay listings. If you want the cheaper sibling, the SC 2 EasyFix is 1,500 W and 3.2 bar against the SC 3’s 1,900 W and 3.5 bar (PriceSpy’s listing). We did not check how the SC 2 handles refilling.

Woman & Home

Editorial test Home test by eCommerce editor Laura Honey with expert tester Madeline Crisp, 23 February 2026, of the SC 3 EasyFix Extra · womanandhome.com · the most recent UK hands-on test

Woman & Home tested the Extra bundle, which is the same 1,900 W machine with a window tool, a carpet glider and more cloths. What it says about the cleaner itself applies to the standard SC 3. The tester found it “light and easy to move around” on hard floors, ready in about 30 seconds, and good at leaving floors that dry quickly. The verdict is a fair summary of the whole category: “a nice tool to have if you want to keep hard floors sparkling”, but it “won’t replace the need for a carpet cleaner”. On carpet it only freshened the surface.

The criticisms are practical. The hand unit was “uncomfortable to grip”. The open-topped tank risks spills. And the 1-litre tank “needed refilling quite often if you’re cleaning a large area”. You can refill it hot, but it is still a stop. Two older tests back up the main points. Top Ten Reviews (March 2023) measured about 23 minutes of steam per fill and 145°C at the nozzle, said it beat every mop it had tried on a muddy hallway, and noted the short cable and a slightly damp floor. Real Homes (2018, updated 2019) preferred it “for smaller, more detailed jobs”. It found the kitchen floor results good, “although I wouldn’t qualify it as a deep clean”, and it also wanted a longer cable.

An SC3 being used on several surfaces, which is the case for a cylinder cleaner over a mop. The listing does not say which SC3 version it is.

Mumsnet

Community “Steam cleaners – are they worth it?” (September 2022, 20 replies) and “If you were going to buy a Kärcher steam cleaner…” (June 2014, 8 replies) · thread one · thread two · what owning one is like after the first week

Neither thread is about the current SC 3, and the posters are not verified buyers. They are useful because they cover the things tests do not: how often you actually use a steam cleaner, and what goes wrong. In the 2014 thread, owners of Kärcher’s older SC2 cylinders give the most practical tips we found. One says you do not need to wait for the tank to cool to refill. One says the machine “just runs around after you” on its wheels. And one says pieces of old towel work instead of Kärcher’s own floor cloths, which keeps the running cost down. (That poster refilled the older model after unplugging it to release the pressure. The SC 3’s tank can be topped up while it is running.)

The 2022 thread is more mixed and more useful as a warning. Owners use steam cleaners on floors, grout, upholstery and even defrosting freezers. Several say theirs broke within months. Some found them disappointing on grimy grout. Others mention damp floors and the risk to laminate and Amtico, and one finds doing floors hard on the back. The most positive long-term report in the thread is for a Shark steam mop, not a cylinder. The lesson is that the SC 3 is worth it if you will use the hand tools often. For floors alone, a mop is less effort.

Currys, Toolstation and PriceSpy

Retailer ratings 4.4/5 from 56 customer reviews at Currys Ireland; 4/5 from 20 reviews at PriceSpy; 38 reviews at Toolstation with the average not loaded. All checked 7 October 2026 · currys.ie · pricespy.co.uk · toolstation.com

These are the shops’ own rating blocks, and we could see the scores but not the review text. The best figure is 4.4 out of 5 from 56 reviews at Currys, on its Irish site. That is the same white SC 3 EasyFix sold in the UK, priced there at €229.99. PriceSpy shows 4 out of 5 from 20 reviews. Toolstation shows 38 reviews, but its average did not load for us, so we have not used it. A score of around 4 out of 5 is good but not outstanding, and it is lower than the 4.7 Shark’s Klik n’ Flip gets from far more buyers. Steam cleaners that do several jobs tend to collect more mixed reviews than single-job mops.

The retailers mostly agree on the specification: 30 seconds to heat up, 3.5 bar, 1 litre, a 4-metre cable and a 2-year guarantee. Where they differ, we have shown both figures in the table above (weight, steam output, and whether the 75 m² figure is per tank or per hour). Prices vary a lot. PriceSpy tracked £99.99 to £153.50 across 13 shops, with a three-month low of £116.99. Toolstation was at £159.99 but out of stock for delivery, and Euronics was at £164.99. Anything near £100 is a good price. We also saw a listing at £54.99, which is so far below every other price that we would check exactly what was being sold.

Cylinder steam cleaner or steam mop?

This is the decision that matters. A stick steam mop like the Shark Klik n’ Flip S6003UK is a floor tool. You take it off its hook and start, and it steams in about 30 seconds. Its tank is small, about 0.35 litres or roughly 11 minutes, and it cost £104.99 when we checked it. A cylinder steam cleaner like the SC 3 takes a minute longer to set up, because you fit the hose and pipes. In return you get a 1-litre tank you can refill hot, and hand tools for grout, extractor hoods, taps, shower screens and the oven door. Buy the mop if most of the cleaning is floors. Buy the SC 3 if you will clean tiles, kitchen surfaces and bathroom fittings at least as often as the floor. For windows only, a Kärcher WV 6 window vac does that job better. For outside, the K4 pressure washer is a different kind of machine altogether.

Strengths and weak points

What holds up

  • Steam in about 30 seconds. Kärcher claims it and testers confirm it.
  • The 1-litre tank can be refilled while hot, so a big job does not stop for a cool-down.
  • About 23 minutes of steam per fill in Top Ten Reviews’ test, roughly twice a typical steam mop.
  • Very good at detail work: grout, taps, hobs and corners a mop cannot reach.
  • Cleans with tap water only, no detergent.
  • The EasyFix floor cloth comes off without touching it, and Kärcher says it washes at 60°C.

What people complain about

  • The 4-metre cable is short. Two testers said so and both wanted a longer one.
  • Floors are left slightly damp.
  • On carpet it only freshens. It is not a carpet cleaner.
  • The hand unit is uncomfortable to grip, and the open tank can spill.
  • Getting it out and fitting the pipes is more work than taking a mop off a hook.
  • The descaling cartridge has to be replaced, and Kärcher’s UK pages do not say how often or what it costs.

Who it actually suits

Buy it if you want one machine for the bathroom, the kitchen and the floors, live in a hard-water area where cleaning limescale off grout and taps is a regular job, or want to stop using spray cleaners. Try to pay around £100 to £130, and buy from Kärcher direct if you want the third year of guarantee.

Look elsewhere if you mainly want to steam the kitchen floor every day. A stick steam mop is faster to use and cheaper. Also look elsewhere if your floors are unsealed wood, or a laminate or LVT whose maker says not to steam it. Kärcher says sealed laminate is fine, but flooring makers often say otherwise, and theirs is the guarantee you could lose. And if you want to deep-clean carpets, you need a carpet cleaner.

What we could not check

  • Descaling cartridge: how often and how much. Kärcher says the cartridge “must be replaced regularly”, and the manual has a table based on water hardness, but we could not read that table or find a UK price for replacements (part 2.863-018.0). Budget for them if you live in a hard-water area.
  • Floor cloth replacement cost. Kärcher sells EasyFix cloth sets, but we found no UK price. One Mumsnet owner uses old towels instead, on an older model.
  • Kärcher’s own selling price. The product page did not show a price or an add-to-basket button when we fetched it, so we cannot quote an RRP. The nearest figures are Euronics’ £164.99 and the £164.99 that Woman & Home quotes for the Extra bundle.
  • Weight. Kärcher says 3.1 kg without accessories and Toolstation says 4.4 kg. We do not know what Toolstation’s figure includes.
  • Steam output and temperature. Toolstation prints 40 g/min and 140°C, and Currys Ireland prints 40–100 g/min. Kärcher’s UK page did not give either figure when we fetched it.
  • Noise. No source gave a figure.
  • Independent UK lab testing. Which? covers steam cleaners, but its scores are behind a paywall, so we have not used them.
  • The buyer reviews themselves. We could read the scores but not the review text at Currys, Toolstation or PriceSpy. Argos and Amazon would not load for us.
  • The videos. All three were confirmed through search listings, not by opening them, because YouTube does not load from our research tools. None of the listings named the channel.
