Shark Stratos IZ400UK Review: 60 Minutes on Paper, 54 on the Clock
Shark says sixty minutes. Which? measured fifty-four at minimum power and ten at maximum. Expert Reviews clocked ten minutes and forty-seven seconds on Boost and about forty-one on the automatic setting. All of those are true at once, and which one you get depends entirely on which button you press — so we have put every figure, and the name of whoever published it, where you can see them.
Where the reviews line up
The evidence here comes from three places that could hardly be less alike: a timed bench test at Expert Reviews, sixty-two Reddit posts and comments from owners collected in one place, and 1,872 customer ratings at AO.com. Behind them sit the publicly visible half of a Which? test and a six-week live-with-it review at Mumsnet Reviews, which is the only hands-on write-up we found of the plain IZ400UK rather than its Pet Pro twin.
Three things come up everywhere. The anti-hair-wrap works — not as marketing but as an observed absence of hair on the brush roll, reported by a tester living with pets and long-haired teenagers for six weeks and echoed across the Reddit threads. Suction is genuinely strong for a cordless, rated above comparable stick vacuums by owners and called "superb cleaning performance" by the one title that timed and weighed it. And Clean Sense IQ, the automatic mode, is the setting people actually use, because it is the only one that gets you anywhere near a useful run time without emptying the battery in ten minutes.
Two honest caveats. It is heavy for a stick vacuum at roughly 4.1 kg assembled; Reddit's most consistent complaint is the weight against a Dyson, and the motor and bin sit at the handle, so you feel it. And the bin is 0.7 litres — Expert Reviews calls that average-sized, and it is the figure that decides how often you walk to the bin rather than how well the machine cleans.
The buying decision is not really about the Stratos, it is about the price you pay. The RRP is quoted at anything from £399.99 to £449 depending on who is telling you, and nobody is selling it at those numbers. Live UK prices on 18 September 2026 clustered at £249 with one retailer at £229 and a comparison site showing £209.97. At £429 this would be a hard sell against Dyson. At £249 it is a straightforward one.

Before the review: which IZ400 is this?
We are reviewing the IZ400UK: the plain single-battery Stratos in charcoal grey and rose gold, the one Argos, Currys, AO, John Lewis and Marks Electrical all list. We settled on it because it is the model the assignment names and the one at the centre of the UK price comparisons.
The confusing part is the IZ400UKT. The T does not mean twin battery — Shark lists the IZ400UKT as a single-battery machine too. It is the Pet Pro version: same motor, same battery, same bin, in a copper colourway, with a motorised pet tool added in the box. That matters here because the two titles that actually put a stopwatch on this machine, Expert Reviews and Which?, both tested the IZ400UKT. Their performance numbers should carry across; their box contents will not. Do not confuse either with the IZ420UKT, a different Stratos Pro that Trusted Reviews covered separately.

Expert Reviews
This is the source that does the work nobody else does: it puts a stopwatch on each power mode. Full Boost gave 10 minutes 47 seconds. Clean Sense IQ, the automatic setting that reads the floor and throttles the motor to suit, gave about 41 minutes. Economy it rates as comparable to a Dyson Gen5detect. Line those up against Shark's "up to 60 minutes" and the claim stops being a lie and starts being a specific promise about one specific mode you will rarely use on carpet.
Its other numbers are useful precisely because they are unglamorous. The motor unit at the handle is about 1.6 kg on its own, which is why the machine feels top-heavy rather than merely heavy. The bin is 0.7 litres, which it calls average-sized and lists as a drawback. It did not measure noise. The verdict is "superb cleaning performance", with the honest complaint that the floorhead "loses contact with floor on pull back" — a real-world annoyance that no specification sheet will ever tell you about. It reviewed at £449 and noted a street price of £269.99 even then.
The catch we have to flag: this is the IZ400UKT, the Pet Pro version. Mechanically that is the same machine with a pet tool added, so the run times and the weights should carry across to the IZ400UK — but they are not, strictly, measurements of the model you would be buying.

Quote the number with the caveat or it misleads: 62 items gathered, but only 18 carry a sentiment score, and an 83% positive rate off 18 data points is a direction of travel, not a statistic. What makes this worth reading anyway is that it is the only source here with nothing to sell, and the complaints are consistent rather than scattered.
The praise is specific. Owners single out the soft roller on hardwood for not firing debris across the room, the brush roll for not clogging with animal hair, and the fact that mixed floors need no head-swapping — the Clean Sense IQ automation earning its keep. Suction is repeatedly described as stronger than comparable cordless machines. Owners who bought a second battery describe swapping as the thing that makes the run time a non-issue, which is a real answer to the 54-minute problem and one that costs money.
Two complaints recur, and both are structural rather than faults. Weight against a Dyson is the headline one. The second is the dry bin: this is a machine you empty by hand into a bin, in a market that has moved towards self-emptying docks, and owners who have used one notice. Neither is a defect. Both are reasons somebody returns a vacuum.

Treat this for what it is: customer ratings hosted by a shop with an interest in the answer. But 1,872 is a large enough sample that the score is hard to move with a handful of planted reviews, and unlike the Argos and Currys listings — which we could not read at all — AO publishes its full specification alongside the ratings. That combination is why it is here.
The specification block is the single most useful thing on the page, because it is the only retailer listing that publishes a noise figure of 86 dB alongside Marks Electrical, and one of the few to state the charge time as 3.5 hours and the suction as 142 air watts. It confirms the 0.7-litre bin, the 25.2 V removable battery and the 5-year warranty on registration. It is also where the box-contents disagreement shows up: AO lists only a DuoClean floorhead and a crevice tool, where Currys Business, Cleanstore and Appliances Direct all add a multi-surface tool, an odour cartridge and an accessory bag.
On price, AO had it at £249 on 18 September 2026, the same figure as Amazon, Very, Hughes, Marks Electrical and Appliances Direct, and a penny under Argos at £249.99. That is not a sale; that is the market price. Anyone quoting you an RRP of £429.99 is quoting a number that has not been charged for a long time.

Who it actually suits
Buy it if you have pets or long hair and a house of mixed flooring, you will leave it on the automatic setting, and you can get it at or under £249. The hair handling is the thing this machine genuinely does better than its price suggests, and the five-year warranty on registration is worth the ten minutes it takes to register.
Look elsewhere if weight is the deciding factor — 4.1 kg is at the heavy end and no amount of suction fixes a machine you resent lifting — or if you want a self-emptying dock, or if most of your cleaning is stairs, where the missing motorised mini-head really tells. And if you are being offered it near its RRP, wait: on the evidence of 18 September 2026, £249 is the normal price and £229 is available.
What we could not check
- The videos were confirmed by search listing, not by opening them. youtube.com would not load for us at all — every fetch was refused by the proxy and direct requests were blocked by policy. Under our standing rule for that case, each video here had its exact watch URL and title returned by two differently-worded searches. We could not read the channel name for any of the three, because no search snippet carried it. Treat the channels as unknown, and check each clip is what you expect before trusting it.
- Currys' own price. Currys lists the IZ400UK in rose gold, but the page is rendered in the browser and we could not read a price from it; Currys Business showed the same model out of stock with no price. We have not quoted a Currys figure rather than guess one.
- Shark UK's own RRP and price. sharkclean.co.uk refused us outright, so every RRP on this page is somebody else's report of Shark's number — which is exactly why there are four different ones.
- Argos' rating and sample size. The Argos product page is browser-rendered and gave us nothing; the £249.99 is from a live price comparison, not from Argos directly. Amazon.co.uk refused us on robots.txt, so its rating count is missing too.
- The bin capacity conflict. Shark and every retailer say 0.7 litres. Which? publishes 0.9. We cannot tell you whether that is a different measurement method or a different reading, and we have printed both rather than choose.
- Noise. 86 dB comes from two retailers repeating a manufacturer figure. No independent test we could read measured it, and Which? keeps its dB behind the paywall.
- Which?'s actual score. Only the headline figures are public. Whether this is a Best Buy, a Don't Buy or neither is behind a £9.99-a-month subscription, and we have not paid it or guessed at it.
- Everything timed was timed on the IZ400UKT. Nobody with a stopwatch tested the plain IZ400UK. The only hands-on review of the exact model, at Mumsnet Reviews, ran it for six weeks but reported Shark's "up to 60 minutes" rather than measuring it.
- Long-term battery health. No source we found covers how the battery holds up after two or three years, which for a cordless vacuum is the question that decides whether it was good value.
