Vax Platinum SmartWash Review: Clean Carpets, but Dry in an Hour?
Vax’s mid-range upright carpet washer is still on sale, and buyers love it. Testers agree it makes a tired carpet look new. The catch is in the small print: the one-hour dry time is Vax’s claim, the tester who timed it got “a few hours”, and the machine weighs between 7.4 kg and 8.6 kg depending on who you ask, before you add 3.5 litres of water.
Where the reviews line up
The evidence comes from three places: a hands-on test by Expert Reviews (backed by a second home test at Real Homes and a Which? first look), owners asking for repair help on JustAnswer, and thousands of buyer ratings at John Lewis, Currys and Marks Electrical. On the cleaning, they agree.
Three things come up everywhere. It cleans well: Expert Reviews said a rug “looked like a new rug”, and Real Homes gave top marks for reviving a tired carpet. It is easy to drive: you push forward to wash and pull back to dry, with no trigger to hold. And the tools are useful: the 2.5 m hose and SpinScrub hand tool do stairs, sofas and stubborn stains.
Two honest caveats. It is big, heavy and loud. Expert Reviews called the noise “a cacophonous racket”, and Real Homes found it hard work to carry upstairs with a full tank. And “dry in as little as one hour” is a claim, not a test result. Expert Reviews’ rug was not dry enough to walk on for a couple of hours and was fully dry the next day.
The buying decision is price and how often you will use it. Vax itself showed two different prices on 8 October, £189.99 and £299.99, and John Lewis and Marks Electrical were both at £189. Do not pay £299. At £189 it is fair value if you will clean carpets several times a year. If it is once a year, renting may make more sense, and Expert Reviews’ own tester doubted he would use it more than “a handful of times a year”.
The three reviews this summary is built from
- Expert ReviewsHands-on test by Andy Shaw, February 2021, of this exact model. Real Homes and Which? tried it in the same month.
- JustAnswerFour owner repair questions in search results, two read in full. Small sample, but the only place problems are written down.
- John Lewis, Currys & Marks Electrical4.8/5 from 6,452, 1,032 and 1,047 reviews, 8 October 2026. All hosted by shops selling it.
Before the review: which SmartWash is which
Vax sells several machines with “Platinum SmartWash” in the name. This page covers the Platinum SmartWash, model CDCW-SWXS (Vax SKU 1-1-142257), the one with the hose, SpinScrub tool and 2-in-1 antimicrobial tool. The SmartWash Classic (CDCW-SWXC) is the cheaper sibling: £179.99 at Vax on 8 October, the same 3.5 litre and 1.9 litre tanks, but a 7 m cord and just an upholstery tool. The Pet-Design and SmartWash XL Advanced are separate, dearer models. Check the model number on the listing before you buy.

Expert Reviews
Who they are: Andy Shaw has been a professional reviewer for 30 years, starting with PC games and computer hardware, and now reviews a wide range of home products for Expert Reviews, from vacuum cleaners to printers — a long, practised eye for testing.
Expert Reviews ran the machine over a rug and a sofa at home. The cleaning result was the headline: “Frankly, it looked like a new rug.” The SpinScrub tool was good on stains, and the upholstery attachment pulled a lot of dirt out of a sofa, though it needed some scrubbing by hand. It was “relatively easy to manoeuvre” once set up, and the tanks were easy to empty.
The test is most useful where it pushes back on the box. Drying took longer than Vax says: “It still needs a few hours after cleaning to completely dry, though.” The rug was not dry enough to walk on for a couple of hours and was dry the next day. The machine “creates a cacophonous racket”. It weighs 7.4 kg before any water goes in. And Shaw worked out the solution cost at about 22p a square metre, using £44.99 for four litres at the time. His honest doubt is worth repeating: “I’m not convinced I’d use it more than a handful of times a year, if that.”
Two other titles tried it in the same month. Real Homes (Sarah Warwick, January 2021) gave it top marks on a tired carpet but needed more than one pass on a coffee stain. It found the machine hard to carry upstairs full and the solution tank awkward to fill. It also reported that Vax says other makers’ solutions can void the guarantee. Which? published a first look but no public score, and labelled the one-hour dry time “a manufacturer claim”. All three tests are from 2021. The model is the same, but nobody has retested it since.

Who they are: JustAnswer is a paid question-and-answer service where customers put questions to people the site lists as experts, such as appliance technicians; answers are individual opinions on one case, so we treat them as indicative rather than definitive.
We looked for owner forums and Reddit threads about this model and found very little. Owners seem to rate it and move on. The place problems do get written down is JustAnswer, a paid Q&A site where owners ask technicians for help. That is a small, self-selected sample of people with faults, so it tells you what goes wrong, not how often.
The two threads we read cover the faults you would expect on a machine that pumps water. One owner, with a machine about two years old, found it “leaking water out on to the floor when machine not used”. The technician pointed to the solution tank cap, a cracked or badly seated tank, or the reservoir underneath. Another reported “No sucking up”, with water “coming out from the side when trying to dry”. The advice was to empty and rinse the dirty tank, clean the filter, check the lid is seated and look at the nozzle, and to go back to the retailer if it was still under warranty. Both point the same way: most suction and leak problems are seating and cleaning, so empty and rinse the tanks after every use. If that does not fix it, the 6-year guarantee is worth having, but only if you registered the machine.

Who they are: John Lewis’ ratings are moderated by PowerReviews and include free-product and prize-draw reviews; Currys’ are invited from buyers and moderated by Feefo with no incentives; Marks Electrical’s come via Feefo from customers with proof of purchase — all buyer satisfaction, not tests.
These are buyer ratings on pages that sell the product, so take them for what they are. Some of these review counts may also include reviews Vax collects and shares with retailers. Vax’s own pages showed 8,657 and 9,187 reviews on two different URLs, which suggests a pooled total. Even so, 4.8 out of 5 across thousands of ratings at three shops is very consistent. Few people who buy one regret it.
The same pages also give you the facts that matter when you buy. Marks Electrical had it in stock for immediate delivery at £189. John Lewis was also at £189. Currys was at £299 with home delivery showing as unavailable. Marks Electrical states the 6-year guarantee needs registering within three months of purchase. John Lewis’s page says 2 years in one place and 6 in another, so register with Vax whichever shop you use. None of the fetched pages gave us the text of the reviews, so we cannot tell you what the few unhappy buyers complained about.

What holds up
- Cleaning results: both hands-on testers said tired carpets looked new.
- Push to wash, pull to dry, with the solution measured for you from its own tank.
- 2.5 m hose and SpinScrub tool for stairs, sofas and stains.
- 9 m cord, longer than the Classic’s 7 m.
- 4.8/5 from more than 8,500 buyers across three retailers.
- 6-year guarantee if you register it.
What people complain about
- Drying took “a few hours” in the one test that timed it, not one hour.
- Very loud, and no dB figure published.
- Heavy (7.4–8.6 kg empty) and bulky to store or carry upstairs.
- Stubborn stains can need more than one pass.
- Vax says to use only Vax solution, which is an ongoing cost.
- Price swings: £189 to £299.99 on the same day, even on Vax’s own site.
Who it actually suits
Buy it if you have carpets and stairs, children or pets, and you will wash carpets a few times a year. At £189 it costs about the same as a few rentals, and you get the hose tools for sofas and car seats. Keep vacuuming with your normal machine, whether that is a Henry, a Dyson V15 or a Gtech AirRam. A carpet washer is not a vacuum, and you should vacuum before you wash.
Look elsewhere if your floors are mostly hard, in which case a Shark steam mop or a Kärcher SC 3 fits better. Also look elsewhere if you have nowhere to store a machine more than a metre tall, or if you only need to deal with the odd spill, which a small spot cleaner does for less money.
What we could not check
- The weight. Vax’s own spec table now says 8.6 kg; John Lewis, Currys, Marks Electrical, Expert Reviews and Which? say 7.4 kg; Appliances Direct says 8.5 kg. We could not find out whether Vax changed the machine or the way it measures, so we have printed all three.
- The dirty tank size. 1.9 litres from three sources, 2.9 litres from Appliances Direct. Vax’s page lists neither tank.
- Power and cord from Vax. The 1,200 W and 9 m figures come from retailers and Real Homes. Vax’s page lists neither. John Lewis’s 90 cm cable is almost certainly a typing error.
- Noise. No source publishes a decibel figure.
- The real dry time. Only Expert Reviews timed it, on one rug in 2021. It will depend on your carpet, the room and how many drying passes you do.
- Our running cost is a simple sum. 1.2 kW for an hour at 26.32p/kWh is about 31.6p. A 30-minute room would be about 15.8p. We did not measure how long a room takes, and we did not recheck the current price of Vax solution.
- Any recent editorial test. The three tests we found are from early 2021. We found no independent retest since, and no public Which? score.
- Stock at Vax. Vax’s pages showed “Add to basket” but no stock status, and two different prices on two URLs on 8 October 2026.
- Review text and faults. We could not read the text of the retailer reviews, and the JustAnswer threads are a small sample of owners with faults, not a fault rate.
- The videos. We confirmed all three videos by their titles in two different search listings. We did not open them, and none of the listings named the channel.
- The Pet-Design and Rapid Power models. We did not research them for this page.
Sources last checked 8 October 2026. Vax prices change often and its own site showed two prices on the same day, so check the listing in front of you before ordering.
