Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty IP3251UKT Review: 70 Minutes Claimed, 44 Timed

This is Shark’s self-emptying stick: the vacuum docks into a floor-standing base that pulls the dust out of its bin and charges it overnight. Two UK testers rate its pick-up very highly, and over a thousand buyers broadly agree. The figures to watch are the run time, which falls well short of the box claim when timed, and a six-hour charge.

What the three reviews share

The evidence comes from a timed bench test by Expert Reviews, a home test at Ideal Home, and 1,015 shopper ratings at Littlewoods. All three are on the UK model, the IP3251UKT, and they point the same way more often than not.

Pick-up is the headline. Expert Reviews recorded every scrap of cereal and pet hair on both floor types and 99% of flour on hard floor in one pass (92% on carpet). Ideal Home calls the automatic suction adjustment impressive and responsive. The dock changes the routine: both testers single it out, and Shark says it holds up to 45 days of dirt. The 4.2/5 average from over a thousand buyers is good without being exceptional for a Shark.

The catches are consistent too. Run time is shorter than the 70-minute claim: Expert Reviews timed 43 minutes 38 seconds in Eco and just over ten minutes on full power. It is top-heavy as a handheld and the floor head can feel stiff on some carpets. A full charge takes about six hours by Shark’s figure, six and a half by Ideal Home’s clock.

Price is the swing factor. Shark’s own shop lists it at £569.99 today and other retailers ask more, so the auto-empty base costs you a real premium over a plain stick. If you hate emptying a bin, it earns that premium. If you do not mind, a cheaper Shark cleans almost as well.

The three reviews this summary is built from

Which model this is

“PowerDetect Clean & Empty” is sold under several codes. The UK cordless stick with the auto-empty base is the IP3251UKT (white and Java grey). The IP3251 without a suffix is the North American and Australian version, and the IP3253 is a related model; neither is reviewed here. The cheaper PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty IA3241UKT and the older Detect Pro IW3611UKT are different machines. Shark’s UK shop still lists the IP3251UKT, and Marks Electrical showed it in stock when we checked.

Expert Reviews

Editorial test Andy Shaw, 18 November 2024, reviewed at £550 · expertreviews.co.uk · the only timed run test we found

Who they are: Expert Reviews’ own writer biographies say Andy Shaw has been a professional reviewer for 30 years across a wide range of products; the outlet gives no specialism or vacuum-testing tenure for him, so we weight this review for its measured results rather than his title.

This is the most useful source because it puts numbers on things. In Eco mode the battery lasted 43 minutes 38 seconds; on full power, 10 minutes 14 seconds. Against Shark’s headline 70 minutes that is a big gap, although Shark’s figure is for Eco with a non-motorised tool, and Expert Reviews does not say which head it ran. Pick-up was close to perfect: all the cereal and pet hair on both carpet and hard floor, and 99% of flour from hard floor in a single pass, 92% from carpet. Peak suction came in slightly below the Dyson V15 Detect and the Samsung Bespoke Jet Pro Extra but, in Eco, it had the strongest suction of the group.

The criticisms are about handling. Rubber flaps behind the second roller make the head drag on some carpets, full power can lift rugs, and at well over six feet tall the tester found it harder to pull back at an upright angle. He likes the night mode, which delays the noisy empty until the house is asleep, and calls it good value for what it does at £550, which was cheaper than the Dyson at the time.

Ideal Home

Editorial test Jullia Joson, 23 October 2024, tested in her own home · idealhome.co.uk · the living-with-it view

Who they are: Ideal Home’s author page describes Jullia Joson as a former Junior Writer (October 2022 to December 2024) who focused on home tech and cleaning and was an Ideal Home Certified Expert in Training on Vacuums with over 60 hours of testing; that is a newer tester than Expert Reviews’, so read this for everyday use rather than measurement.

Where Expert Reviews ran a stopwatch, Ideal Home used it as a household vacuum. A whole-home clean in Detect mode, with the small tools, took roughly 40 minutes, which suggests the battery covers an average house in one go if you stay off Boost. Charging from flat took around six and a half hours by her clock, half an hour longer than Shark quotes, and she flags that as slower than some rivals.

She calls it Shark’s strongest cordless by far. The automatic suction adjustment gets the most praise, along with pick-up in both directions on hard floor and carpet, and she calls the dock a game-changer for upkeep and storage. Her complaints overlap with Expert Reviews’: it is top-heavy in handheld and flex mode, the MultiFLEX bending wand feels awkward, and hair sometimes catches in the auto-empty dock. She also lists the stick bin at 0.8 litres and the base at 2 litres; Shark’s own page says 0.7 litres.

Who they are: Ideal Home is a UK homes title which says it reviews every vacuum it recommends at home and at a dedicated test facility over a two-week (often longer) process, with flour, rice, cereal and pet-hair pick-up tests; it earns affiliate commission and does not explain how it measures noise, so weight it as structured hands-on testing.

Littlewoods

Retailer ratings 4.2/5 from 1,015 reviews on the IP3251UKT listing, checked 16 October 2026 · littlewoods.com · the largest UK sample we could read

A thousand-plus ratings is a decent sample, and 4.2 out of 5 is solid if a notch below the 4.6 to 4.7 that Currys shows for cheaper Shark sticks. The page did not display a star breakdown or the review text when we read it, so we cannot tell you whether the dissatisfied buyers are unhappy with the battery, the dock or deliveries. A count this large on a smaller retailer also suggests some reviews may be shared from Shark’s own system rather than written by Littlewoods customers alone.

The other figure worth knowing is a warning sign. Shark’s own UK page shows a customer rating of 3.1 out of 5, with no count. Without a sample size that figure tells us nothing reliable, but it does not match the Littlewoods picture, and we would want to know why before spending close to £600. The Littlewoods listing said “awaiting stock” when we checked.

What it does well, and where it falls short

In its favour

  • Near-total pick-up of cereal, pet hair and flour in Expert Reviews’ test.
  • Suction adjusts itself to the floor and the dirt, praised by both testers.
  • The base empties the bin after each clean and holds weeks of debris.
  • Night mode delays the loud empty cycle.
  • Base doubles as charger and tool storage.
  • Five-year guarantee once registered with Shark.

Against it

  • Timed Eco run of under 44 minutes against a 70-minute claim; about 10 minutes on Boost.
  • Six to six and a half hours to charge.
  • Top-heavy as a handheld; the bending wand divides opinion.
  • Floor head can drag on some carpets; Boost can lift rugs.
  • Hair can snag in the dock.
  • Battery covered for two years, not five.
  • Expensive, and retailer prices differ by more than £150.

Who should consider it

A good fit if you have pets or a busy household, want a stick that empties itself, and have a spot near a socket for a base about 118 cm tall. If emptying a bin over the kitchen bin is the part of vacuuming you hate, this removes it. For the rival Expert Reviews measured it against, see our Dyson V15 Detect review.

Probably not for you if you need long Boost sessions on thick carpet, want a light handheld for stairs, or would rather keep the money. Shark’s own Stratos IZ400UK and Detect Pro IW1511UK cost less, and the Bosch Unlimited 7 runs on a battery you can share with Bosch garden and DIY tools.

Things we were unable to confirm

  • The videos. All three were confirmed by their titles and watch URLs appearing in two separate search listings, not by opening them, and the listings did not name the channels.
  • Which head Expert Reviews used for its run test. It was not possible to say whether the 43-minute figure is comparable with Shark’s 70 minutes, which is for Eco with a non-motorised tool.
  • Bin capacity. Shark and Marks Electrical say 0.7 litres; Ideal Home says 0.8 litres. We have printed both.
  • Noise. The 86 dB figure appears on Marks Electrical’s listing only. Shark does not publish one, and neither tester measured it.
  • Running cost. Shark does not publish the battery capacity or the base’s power draw, so we have no way to work out a charging cost at the Ofgem cap.
  • The buyer ratings. We were unable to read the Littlewoods star breakdown, the review text, or whether the 1,015 reviews include ones syndicated from Shark. AO’s and John Lewis’s review pages would not load for us, and Shark’s own 3.1/5 came with no sample size.
  • Sellers. The Littlewoods listing does not show who ships it. Marks Electrical says it sells as an agent of Euronics.
  • Stock. Shark’s page carries a back-in-stock prompt and Littlewoods said “awaiting stock”; Currys’ product link now opens its vacuum listing, where this model did not appear. Only Marks Electrical showed it in stock.
  • RRP. Shark shows no was-price. Expert Reviews reviewed it at £550; Littlewoods quotes a was-price of £724.99.
  • Long-term reliability. Neither editorial test ran beyond a few weeks, and the battery is guaranteed for two years only.
