Vax SpotWash Home Duo Review: A £109 Spot Cleaner That Lifts Most Stains
The SpotWash Home Duo is Vax’s best-reviewed corded spot cleaner, and the people who have used it agree it shifts squash, coffee and car-seat grime with little fuss. The catches are small ones that add up: a 1.1-litre clean tank, a carpet that stays damp for a while, and an antibacterial solution that costs about a pound a wash at Vax’s own prices.
What the three sources agree on
We drew on three kinds of evidence: a stain-by-stain editorial test by Andy Shaw at Expert Reviews, a hands-on write-up from the gadget blog WhatGear, which used it on stairs and a car, and the Currys buyer ratings, 4.8/5 from 184 reviews, with Vax’s own 4.6/5 from 387 alongside.
On cleaning, they line up. Everyday spills come out. Expert Reviews lifted blackcurrant squash and coffee easily and left only a faint trace of ketchup; WhatGear cleared milk and burger grease from a passenger seat and did a staircase in under ten minutes. The suction is the point: the machine pulls the dirty water back into its own tank, so you are not left blotting a soaked patch.
The limits are just as consistent. It is a spot tool, not a carpet cleaner. Ground-in mud beat Expert Reviews, a Real Homes tester had to refill after about half an hour on a bigger area, and the carpet is left damp rather than dry. You also do some of the work: there is no powered brush, so you scrub by hand with the tool.
At £109 it is worth buying; at £169.99 it is harder to justify. That is the gap on 18 October 2026 between Currys, Marks Electrical and Appliances Direct on one side and Vax’s own shop on the other, for the same CDSW-MPXP.
The three reviews this summary is built from
- Expert ReviewsEditorial test by Andy Shaw, March 2024, with five named stains and a dog mat.
- WhatGearGadget blog and YouTube channel; stairs, car seats and spills, with its own video.
- Currys4.8/5 from 184 buyer reviews, 18 Oct 2026. Vax’s own page: 4.6/5 from 387.
Which SpotWash this is
Vax sells several SpotWash models with similar names. This page covers the SpotWash Home Duo, model CDSW-MPXP (Vax SKU 1-1-142576), which Vax still lists at £169.99 with a basket button. It is not the older single-tool SpotWash CDCW-CSXS, nor the bigger SpotWash Max Duo (CDSW-MSXD), which has 2.8 L and 2.2 L tanks, weighs 5.5 kg and costs £219.99 at Vax, with 147 reviews to the Home Duo’s 387. Argos lists a “SpotWash Duo” and a “SpotWash Max Duo” under their own catalogue numbers; neither page would load its details for us, so check the model code before ordering there.

Expert Reviews
Who they are: Andy Shaw’s Expert Reviews author page says he has been a professional reviewer for 30 years, beginning with PC games and computer hardware and now covering products from vacuum cleaners to printers; that is long reviewing experience rather than a floorcare specialism, so weight the method (named stains, a before-and-after dog mat) more than the verdict.
Shaw worked through a set of household stains on carpet. Blackcurrant squash and coffee came out relatively easily, ketchup left a trace you would struggle to spot, and mud was the failure: it worked down into the pile and left a mark he could not shift. A grubby dog mat came up well, lighter patches lifted and darker ones refreshed. He found the tanks easy to empty into a sink and the tools easy to take apart and rinse.
His reservations are practical. You scrub by hand, you mix the solution yourself in warm water, and the carpet is not dry afterwards, only much drier than a cloth would leave it. The pointed one is value: he found it no better than the slightly cheaper Vacmaster EasyClean, and named the Home Pet-Design (with a rotating brush) and the Bissell SpotClean as alternatives. That test is two and a half years old, though the model and box contents have not changed.

Who they are: We found no published profile for Troy R beyond the article’s own line that he founded WhatGear Ltd; the review was chosen because it is the only hands-on account of this exact model on stairs and in a car, and it comes with its maker’s own video.
WhatGear used the Home Duo the way most buyers will: for the jobs that crop up rather than a whole room. The wide tool took a staircase in under ten minutes, and the small Messy Tool was the one that dealt with real spills. In a car it lifted spilt milk and grease from a burger off a passenger seat. The writer recommends it outright for busy homes with children, pets or guests.
Read it as enthusiasm rather than a test. There are no named failures, no drying times and no comparison with a rival, and the page does not say whether Vax supplied the unit. It is still useful as a real-world counterweight to a lab-style stain list, because it shows the tool range earning its place on stairs and upholstery. A short Mumsnet Talk thread (five replies, April 2024) adds the criticism this blog leaves out: one owner found the hose short and the machine tiring to use with weak grip, though that poster did not name the exact model.

Who they are: Currys’ ratings come from customers emailed an invitation after buying, collected and moderated by Feefo; Currys offers no incentives and labels reviews from third-party samples as incentivised, so this is good evidence of how owners get on, though not a performance test.
Three sets of owner ratings point the same way. Currys shows 4.8 from 184, Vax’s own page 4.6 from 387 (a second Vax offer page showed 346, so the count moves), and Marks Electrical about 4.7 from roughly 193. Scores this close across three collectors suggest few owners are disappointed, which fits a machine that does a narrow job and does not promise more.
The Currys page did not show individual review text, so the scores tell you satisfaction, not reasons. For the reasons, the Real Homes long-term test fills in: Molly Cleary got visible grime out of a worn communal hallway carpet and chocolate off a cream upholstered table with the crevice tool, but needed to refill after about half an hour and found the clean-up afterwards slow. It is the most useful single line for anyone tempted to do a whole room with it.
On price, Currys shows £109 against a was-price of £179, with stock “checking” when we looked; Marks Electrical lists £109 and in stock, and Appliances Direct £109 with fewer than ten left. Currys showed no “sold by” line. We did not find a live AO listing for this model.

Worth having
- Lifts squash, coffee, milk and food grease well, according to both hands-on sources.
- Sucks the dirty water back up, so stains are rinsed rather than smeared.
- Three tools cover carpet, hard floor, stairs, upholstery and car seats.
- 4.5 kg and about 34 cm tall, so it lives in a cupboard.
- Owner ratings of 4.6 to 4.8 across three retailers and several hundred reviews.
- Pennies in electricity: about 3.5p for a 20-minute session on our sums.
Worth knowing
- 1.1 L clean tank: Real Homes was refilling after about half an hour.
- No powered brush, so the scrubbing is yours.
- Ground-in mud defeated Expert Reviews’ test.
- Leaves carpet damp; it needs time to air-dry.
- Antibacterial solution runs to about 75p to £1.05 a wash at Vax’s price.
- Two-year guarantee only, and the second year depends on registering.
Is it the right machine for you?
A good buy if you have pets, children or a pale sofa, and what you need is something to grab when a drink goes over or the dog is sick, at £109 rather than Vax’s £169.99. It also earns its keep on stair carpet and car seats, where a full-size carpet washer is awkward. If you want the same idea with a clean tank more than twice the size, a 750 W motor and a three-year guarantee, compare it with the Bissell SpotClean Pro 1558E.
Pass on it if you want to deep-clean whole rooms. For that, an upright washer such as the Vax Platinum SmartWash carries several times the water and has powered brushes. And if your mess is mostly on hard floors, a wet-dry floor cleaner like the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam will do more of the work for you.
Gaps in the evidence
- Noise. No source publishes a decibel figure, and none of the reviewers comments on it.
- Hose length. We were unable to settle it: Marks Electrical prints both 1.5 m and 1.25 m, and Vax and Currys do not list it.
- Conflicting retailer specs. Appliances Direct prints a 1.6 L clean tank and a 4.5 m cord alongside 1.1 L and 5.5 m; Currys prints 370 W and 400 W. We have used the figures two retailers agree on.
- Argos and AO. It was not possible to load the Argos listings, which are rendered in the browser, or to find a live AO listing, so we have no price from either. Argos is also a marketplace, and its seller line could not be read.
- Drying time. We have no way to give one; no reviewer timed how long the carpet took to dry.
- WhatGear’s review. It shows no year and does not say whether the unit was supplied by Vax.
- The three videos were confirmed by their watch URLs and titles appearing in two separate search listings, not by opening them, because YouTube does not load from here. The listings did not name the channels.
- Long-term reliability. None of the sources has owned one beyond a few months, and the Currys page showed no review text to search for faults.
- Currys’ was-price of £179 carried promotion dates that had passed by the time we looked, so treat the saving with care.
