IKEA KIVIK 3-Seat Sofa Review: £499, 60cm Deep, and a Cover You Can Wash
The KIVIK is the sofa people buy when they want somewhere to lie down rather than something to look at. Owners who have had one for years say it holds up; IKEA’s own buyers rate it 4.1 out of 5. The bits that decide the purchase are less glamorous — a £25-plus delivery, three heavy boxes, a cover that IKEA’s guarantee does not include, and a 365-day return window with one catch: an assembled sofa comes back as IKEA credit, not cash.
Where the reviews line up
There is no lab test of the KIVIK in the UK press that we could find, so the evidence comes from three different directions: Livingetc, whose writer sat on every IKEA sofa in a showroom and ranked the KIVIK among the five she rated; long-term owners, chiefly the Love & Renovations blog (five and a half years with this sofa, six with the one before) and a small Mumsnet thread; and the IKEA UK customer reviews block, 4.1/5 from 550 ratings on 3 October 2026.
They agree on three things. It is comfortable in a lounging, generous way — 180 cm of seat and 60 cm of seat depth, pocket springs under cold foam, firm at first and softer within weeks. The washable cover is the real selling point: owners strip and machine-wash it at 40°C, and a whole new look costs from £119. And the frame lasts; the longest-serving owner we found says hers still looks close to new after five and a half years with children and dogs.
The complaints are consistent too. The seat cushions slide about and need straightening — a Mumsnet owner said weekly. The armrests are low, which Livingetc found awkward for propping your head while reading. And the covers draw a much weaker 3.4/5 from IKEA’s buyers than the sofa does, with “thin” and “one-sided cushion covers” the recurring gripes.
The buying decision is mostly about the retail terms, not the sofa. At £499 in Tresund on 3 October 2026 (down from £599), with a 10-year guarantee on frame and cushions and IKEA’s 365-day return policy, it is a low-risk buy as long as you are happy for a refund on an assembled sofa to come as a refund card — provided you budget for truck delivery, have two people for assembly, and accept that the fabric is a consumable you will eventually replace.
The three reviews this summary is built from
- LivingetcShowroom sit-test of every IKEA sofa, July 2026. Hands-on, but a sit, not a live-with.
- Love & Renovations and MumsnetOne owner at 5.5 years; a six-post UK thread, older model. Long-term, but few voices.
- IKEA UK customer reviews4.1/5 from 550 ratings on the sofa; 3.4/5 from 323 on the covers. 3 October 2026.
Before the review: which KIVIK this is
This page covers the current KIVIK 3-seat sofa — the version with a pocket-spring seat, sold in the UK as frame 405.193.64 plus a removable cover. The version we priced is Tresund anthracite, article 794.828.35, £499 (was £599) on 3 October 2026. The same frame is sold with Tresund light beige (£499), Tallmyra dark green (£529), Kelinge grey-turquoise (£550) and other covers. Older KIVIKs — including the one in the 2013 Mumsnet thread below — had a different seat, so long-term reports on the older sofa only partly apply. Several of the videos are from North American owners, where the same sofa is sold with different cover names.

Livingetc
This is the closest thing to an editorial test we found: a writer going to an IKEA showroom and sitting on every sofa in the range, then ranking the five she rated. The KIVIK made the cut with a plushness score of 7 out of 10 — “it felt good for what it was” — and she makes two practical points owners repeat. The three separate seat cushions make it easier to clean and replace a damaged one, and the firm build suits people with bad backs.
Her main criticism is the armrests: they sit low, so you cannot comfortably prop your head on your hand while reading. She is clear that this is “not a luxury sofa”, but a reasonable one to buy online. What a showroom sit cannot tell you: how the foam ages, how the cover washes, or whether the cushions creep forward in daily use.

Watch on YouTube ↗Love & Renovations and Mumsnet
The most useful long-term voice is an American home blogger now five and a half years into her second KIVIK, having had the first for six. She calls it very comfortable, firm at first and softer within weeks, with a seat depth she likes for lounging. Her strongest claim is about the cover: she strips and machine-washes the cushion covers every eight to twelve weeks, can take the whole lot off when she needs to, and says the sofa still looks “pretty much just as good as the day we got it” after years with children and dogs. She reports no sagging.
The Mumsnet thread is small — six posts, three broadly positive, two mixed — and it is about the pre-2019 KIVIK, but it is the only UK owner discussion we could find and it raises the two things the blog does not. Seat cushions “had the annoying habit of slipping about quite a bit”, needing rebuilding weekly; and one owner’s red covers “faded immensely”. One sofa lasted two and a half years after damp damage; others were fine at three-plus. One poster noted IKEA delivered in a week against six weeks elsewhere.

These ratings are hosted by the only shop that sells the sofa, and the same 550-review block appears on every cover colour, so read it as a rating for the KIVIK 3-seat in general rather than any one fabric. The Kelinge listing showed 539 reviews on the same day — the count is evidently pooled and updated unevenly. IKEA’s summary has buyers praising comfort and use of space and noting that assembly is involved.
The more telling number is the gap between the sofa and its covers. The replacement 3-seat covers average just 3.4 out of 5 from 323 reviews, and IKEA’s own summary of them picks out thin fabric and cushion covers that are only finished on one side, so you cannot flip a cushion to spread the wear. Put that next to the guarantee — which covers the frame and cushions for ten years but explicitly not the cover — and the pattern is clear: the structure is built to last, the fabric is the part you should expect to replace.

IKEA is the only place to buy a new KIVIK, so the retail terms are IKEA’s. On its current UK delivery table, heavier orders go by truck: £25 for orders up to 150 kg, £30 express, £35 for a four-hour slot, plus £5 for weekends. But the same table puts any order containing a box over 25 kg at £40 (£45 express, £50 timed) — and the KIVIK frame’s main box weighs 49.54 kg. Expect the £40 band, not the £25 headline, and check at checkout. IKEA says lead times depend on postcode and are shown at checkout; we could not see one without placing an order. Click and collect from a store is free.
Assembly is a two-person job. If you would rather not do it, IKEA offers assembly through its service partners, but the price is quoted per postcode and we could not obtain a figure. If it is wrong, the 365-day return policy covers assembled items as long as they show no signs of use beyond testing. The catch is in IKEA’s own wording: “Items that have been opened, assembled or are not sellable at full retail value will only be refunded to a refund card.” So a KIVIK you have built and sat on comes back as IKEA credit, not money; only an unopened one goes back to your card. IKEA’s policy names a £25 collection fee for mattresses but gives no collection price for a sofa — ask before you rely on it.
Strengths and weak points
What holds up
- Generous seat: 180 cm wide and 60 cm deep, on IKEA’s figures — long enough to lie down on.
- Pocket springs under cold foam; firm at first, softening within weeks, by owners’ accounts.
- Removable, machine-washable cover, and a full new cover from £119.
- Frame and cushions guaranteed for 10 years; one owner reports near-new condition at 5.5 years.
- 365-day returns, even assembled — though an assembled sofa is refunded as IKEA credit.
- Tested for 40,000–55,000 Martindale abrasion cycles depending on fabric, on IKEA’s figures.
What people complain about
- Seat cushions slide and need straightening.
- Low armrests — awkward for leaning on while reading.
- Covers rated only 3.4/5 by 323 buyers; thin, and cushion covers are one-sided.
- The guarantee excludes the cover, so fading or wear is your cost.
- A 49.54 kg main box puts delivery in IKEA’s £40 band rather than the £25 headline.
- Return an assembled sofa and you get a refund card, not your money back.
- Fading reported on at least one older red cover.
Who it actually suits
Buy it if you want a deep, lie-down sofa for a family room, with children, dogs or both, and you like the idea of washing the cover rather than living with stains. The washable, replaceable cover and the year-long return window make it a low-risk £500 sofa — just remember a change of mind after assembly gets you IKEA credit, not cash.
Look elsewhere if you want high arms to lean on, a firmly tailored look that stays put without plumping, or a fabric you never expect to replace. Measure first: at 228 cm wide and 95 cm deep it is bigger than many three-seaters, and the main box is 184 cm long.
What we could not check
- The videos. All three were confirmed by search listing — the exact watch URL and title appearing in at least two differently worded searches — not by opening them, and no listing showed the uploading channel, so we do not name the channels. Some are North American owners.
- Delivery lead time. IKEA shows it only at checkout, per postcode.
- Assembly service price and assembly time. Quoted per postcode; IKEA’s page gives no time.
- Seat depth and height measured by anyone but IKEA. All dimensions on this page are IKEA’s.
- A lab or Which? test. We found none; Livingetc’s is a showroom sit-test.
- Whether the current KIVIK’s cushions still slide. The clearest complaint comes from a 2013 thread about the older sofa.
- The cover box weight, and whether the sofa ships in two boxes or three; IKEA’s pages differ.
- What IKEA charges to collect a sofa you return. Its policy prices mattress collection only (£25).
- The current KIVIK-specific guarantee leaflet. Exclusions come from IKEA’s 2020 UK sofa guarantee brochure.
- Whether IKEA’s review count is verified-purchase. It is IKEA’s own block; the count differed between colour pages on the same day (550 and 539).
